Meta snapshot #33

Going forward

After the recent news about smaller support for Gwent in 2023, and no official tournaments or content starting from 2024 we need to adjust our plans. We want to continue what we did until this point, but realistically with the expectations of the declining number of viewers on streams, readers of articles, and snapshots, we might need to cut some content that we do. Especially when looking into the far future. We read a lot of positive feedback from the community on Reddit, streams or Discord, that there are people interested in Gwent even when it will not have official support, and community-driven balance is enough to keep them interested in the game and community content. However those are only speculations, and we cannot be sure if those people will still be in Gwent next year, or even next month. So we want to ask everyone who values our content, can, and want to help the community team providing more content in the future to join our Patreon. This will give us a real grasp of the players interested in Gwent still in a way that is a little more than casual gaming. We will make our plans considering the number of Patreons we will have next month. We might be forced to adjust to reality.

Also as a reminder, our Patreons get early access to decks from the snapshot and our other content.

🎄On a positive note, we recommend everyone to check our 25 days of Gwentmas event, a lot of stuff is already available: interviews, articles, infographics, tier lists, summaries of 2022, crosswords, and so on, you can find the full list here and in a list on the right side.

Also check our Meme snapshot for more fun decks.

Merry Gwentmass everyone!

Meta snapshot #33

[24.12] Release: 7 new decks, new ranking, new videos, new matchups & gameplan info.

The year 2022 is coming to an end and with it the last – December season. After preparing the dishes for Christmas Eve, cleaning the house and bringing the Christmas tree from the forest, let’s sit down with friends again for our favorite card game and let the magic of Christmas persuade us to send GG after the game at this special time. You don’t have to wonder what decks to choose in anticipation of the new year, Team Elder Blood has prepared several suggestions …

To the delight of many, assimilate is making its way to the top of the ladder. Many of us spent dozens of hours with her this year, she deserves a dignified farewell this year. This time around, it’s a slightly more controlling version, Enslave as a leader offers many good opportunities to thwart the opponent’s plans.

It would seem that not much has changed in Scoia’tael, but the new cards offered many interesting proposals to the dedicated players of this faction, Call of Harmony has become a permanent alternative to the destructive tactics of Schirrú.

Skellige players can safely fend off the cold outside, just as raids in their decks fend off opponents’ efforts to score on the board.

There are many possibilities in NR thanks to the latest card drop. You can try the proven deck of Priestesses from Melitele, Reaver Hunters are still a solid base for experiments, but we recommend Knights, who, with the support of the Temple of Melitele, featured in a lot of games, you can even meet a certain player with a Shupe – Inspired Zeal deck…

Dagon has provided the monsters with powerful support, and thanks to this, deathwish – previously mainly a tournament deck, stands out on the top list of the fearsome faction.

It is worth leaving the computer during this period and spending time with loved ones, but when the household members go running errands, take one of the lists prepared by us and, while eating gingerbread or poppy seed cake, let’s play Gwent, enjoying the presence of friends.

We hope you will have fun with the current meta and we will see you on the top!

Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, join our Discord, or support us on Patreon so we would be able to keep creating snapshots and content for the community.

Tier #1

Warriors with new Patricidal Fury have gained great options and combos. Leader synergies with Mad Charge, Djenge Frett, Sove and other bloodthirst cards. Sove and Leader gives us a lot of points which is great to tempo pass in R2. The deck – thanks to Highland Warriors – has high reach so engine decks are frightened whenever they see Warriors. Fucusya and Harald reuse their potential, which combines with Tyr and his resurrection ability on his second form.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Beasts

Round 1:

Play Highland Warriors, then try with Brokvar Warrior to setup the Feral Bond to possibly get another Highland Warrior.

Round 2:

It’s very reactive deck so you might struggle with bleed here though vs Knights or Harmony it’s good to bleed out their scenarios.

Round 3:

Destroy everything

Details

Good against:

Engine decks, Enslave Nilfgaard

Bad against:

Difficult against Knights or Harmony

Win condition:

Golds and Raids

Card replacements:

Djenge Frett -> Draig Bon-Dhu.

Knights with Temple of Melitele – and with Yrden backing off the scene – goes up front once again. Immortals and Sorceress combo makes sure we get round control so we can blast points everywhere with scenario R2. We have tutors like Temple to draw the card that we need, so the deck is even more consistent than before. The deck also has great opportunity to gain engine carryover with Squire and Vandergrift combined.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Search for techs like Spores, Pellar or Ale.

Round 1:

Immortals and Damned Sorceress to gain round control

Round 2:

Push with Scenario

Round 3:

Any pointslam card from Temple should give you a win here.

Details

Good against:

Warriors*, Pointslam decks

Bad against:

Control

Win condition:

Scenario, Temple of Melitele

Card replacements:

Nope.

Tier #2

After a long time being more of a meme than an actual meta deck, there it is, Enslave is finally making it as the real control deck with some good options. Thanks to Torres and his flexibility in usage (you can reuse cards such as Vilge, Artaud, Skellen, Nauzicaa or a unit stolen from the opponent) this deck finally got high end gold cards and makes huge swings. But Torres also made this NG list really good in defending coin abuse round one, he is up to 22 points raw stats play, that gives you information about the opponent’s deck and also tags 3 units with spying. Also, in this new meta, more engines and pointslam-heavy resurrected good old assimilate package with Torturer and Artaud, because who can play the opponent’s cards better than himself? Yes, Assimilate.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

If not in hand then mulligan to find Calveit, other than that just keep few bronzes to play round one longer, also you don’t want Nauzicaas in deck.

Round 1:

Play Calveit with few bronzes, try to escape the round.

Round 2:

Defend the bleed with your good cards.

Round 3:

Win short round 3 with Nauzicaa Sergants

Matchups

Mirrors:

Fight for round one, try to stay in reach with the Jan Calveit play. Try to play Calveit after your opponent passed to deny his round one Vilgefortz removing one of your golds. You can try to 2:0 your opponent because you have first say and Torrres advantage.

Other factions:

Against NR: Don’t get baited into leadering Immortals, this leader does nothing, because they just play Damned Sorceress and are totally fine, it’s better to use leader in later rounds on cards like Knight Errant or Vandergrift.
Against ST: It’s the best to use leader on Quarixis, then you can play Artaud into him again proccing Assimilate 3 times and Harmony once.
Against SK: You can play Torres round one, your most important targets won’t stay alive anyways, so it’s good to get some value out of him. Good way of playing this matchup is also copying Tyrs and pointslamming opponent, but to do that you have to have graveyard set up.
Against MO: Kill their Dettlaff with your Skellen, if they go for Dagon in its second form, then try to steal it with your leader, if they will go Dagon in second form then just give it spying tag to make sure you will have a consume in later rounds.

Details

Good against:

NR Knights, NR Reavers

Bad against:

Deathwish

Win condition:

Helge with Skellen or Torres into Artraud/Skellen

Card replacements:

Nope.

Harmony with the new patch has gained more support in terms of Dana and Quarixis which is bounded with leader. Saskia to thin and gain points for round control as we don’t want to get bled. If scenario is not answered you’re gonna get hundreds of points especially if you tutor Quarixis with Ihuarraquax to activate Harmony. Dana on both forms makes huge points – carryover in round 1 or boost your whole board on her second form. The deck has a little control in poisons and Korathi Heatwave.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Search for golds

Round 1:

Play Saskia to gain round control

Round 2:

Push with scenario and go all-in

Round 3:

Lake Guardian is great pointslam here.

Details

Good against:

Pointslam decks

Bad against:

Control and greedy decks.

Win condition:

Scenario and other golds.

Card replacements:

Nope.

Tier #3

Don’t you recognize your old mates? Reaver hunters are back to the game, with some beta flavor still being in the deck. At first new nr cards seemed really bad but it turned out to be one of the strongest archetypes in Gwent. Boholt, Adalia, Locations, and Idarran allow you to easily swarm at least 8 Reaver Hunters melee row each round. Locations also provide a lot of carryover value, especially with Dwims and Reinforcements.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Find echo cards and Temple, then you will be fine.

Round 1:

Play Temple, get good cards, like Adalia, Boholt, Anseis, or Defender. Then set up your engines and win the round with them.

Round 2:

Bleed as much as you can.

Round 3:

If round 3 happens then just use whatever you have left, probably a second Amphibious Assault.

Matchups

Mirrors:

First say is very good, winning round one and 2:0ing opponent feels like a good way to go.

Other factions:

Against NG: Really bad matchup, try not to give then your Scouts to copy with cards like Informant or Remedy.
Against SY: Make as big tempo round one as possible, matchup is really unfavoured and you need to win round one.
Against SK: You have more targets to remove than they have removal, just play your game and you should be fine, also keep HW for Tyr.
Against ST: Just win

Details

Good against:

Deathwish, ST Harmony

Bad against:

SK Warriors, NG Enslave

Win condition:

2:0ing opponent, tempo engines

Card replacements:

Nope.

He is finally here, he was promised to us long time ago, all hail Dagon! He brings a lot of support to an already decent Deathwish archetype. Other cards in the deck are the same like previous patches, and gameplan stays the same: make good tempo with Brewess round one, then bleed your opponent and win round 3 with a huge sword.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Find your Dagon, Brewess and look for good cards.

Round 1:

Play Dagon, infuse cards that you want to play during the game, such as Arachas Queen, Dettlaff but also infuse some bronze deathwish units that Brewess can pull from your deck for you. Play Brewess, if you expect HW or Lock then consume her immediately either with leader or with Dagon. Try to set up carryover Toads, they are really good to start a round 2 push.

Round 2:

Bleed with everything you have, remember that you want to summon Dagon to get an additional 8 points engine with consume.

Round 3:

Win with Succubi, Dettlaff or just with big Sword, whatever you have left.

Matchups

Mirrors:

Try to deny their sword while growing your own.

Other factions:

Against NR: Push round one and pass round 2 as long as your opponent plays their Scenario.
Against SY: Keep Kayran to protect poisoned units from being killed.
Against SK: Their removal means nothing, just win with normie play style.
Against ST: Fight for round one hard.
Against NG: Toad eats Helge, this is all you want to know.

Details

Good against:

SK Warriors

Bad against:

NR Reavers

Win condition:

Dettlaff and Arachas Queen, Succubi spam, Aerondight

Card replacements:

Nope.

At first they nerf you, then they nerf you, after a long time they keep nerfing you, at the end they nerf you, yet you are still here to poison some of the opponent’s units and win some games with Golden Nekker for a huge swing with double poison play.

Gameplan

Mulligan:

Put back Roach and Knickers, be sure your Nekker isn’t bricked, because you only run two artifacts here.

Round 1:

Try not to commit much, do not use Candle round one, set up some coins at first with crimes, then try to get the round with poisons from Shady Vendors.

Round 2:

Set up carryover cards, such as Ciri:Nova and Conjurer’s Candle, then go for a long round 3. While being bled try not to overcommit, cards such as Nekker or Defender are really important in this deck and it would be the best to keep them for round 3.

Round 3:

Win with all you have, in a long round set up unkillable scarabs with Candle (remember about offering, which is a common tech card these days), in a short round just try to sneak in one poison to seal the deal, also count the coins to not waste any value.

Matchups

Mirrors:

First say is really important, basically who sets up their engines first wins.

Other factions:

Against SK: Count their damage cards to know how much you have to buff your own units.
Against NG: Keep removing their Torres targets, also answer Helge with your Freakshow.
Against NR: Just poison their biggest targets.
Against ST: Keep Freakshow for Quarixis

Details

Good against:

NR Knights

Bad against:

Deathwish

Win condition:

Nekker, Poisons, Engines

Card replacements:

Nope.
